Start your trip at the Crossroads Of Time
(COT), the western end of SR28 at US129. Go North on US129 through Deals
Gap to the Calderwood Dam overlook about 10 miles or 298 curves down the
road. Regroup, sniff some tires, have a smoke, then continue about 5 miles
North on US129 to the Foothills Parkway. The 17 miles of Foothills Pkwy
has some nice overlooks, but I imagine you'll be too busy gobbling up some
corners (at 45pmh of course) to notice. At the end of the Parkway turn
right (East) on US321 to go into Townsend, TN. Go ahead and gas up, and
get a bite to eat while you're there. I'd recommend Deadbeat Pete's, it's
tucked away on the North side of the highway. Continue East on US321 for a
little over a mile and turn right onto Smoky Mountain Highway (towards
Gatlinburg and Cade's Cove. A short while later you'll come to a fork in
the road, take the left fork towards Gatlinburg then settle in with the
traffic and enjoy the view. Stay on Little River Rd. for about 12 miles
till you reach US441. Turn right (South) on US441 for about 13 miles to
the top of the ridge, and the entrance to Clingman's Dome. The Dome is a
great little 14 mile side trip that is worth the time, specially if you
are looking to cool off. After returning to US441 continue South another
20 miles into Cherokee, NC. Gas up in Cherokee, then follow the main road
right, then left to get to the Smoky Mountain Expressway (US74). Go West
on US74 (4 lane) for about 15 miles to pick up SR28 North. Then stay on
SR28 for 31 miles to return to Deals Gap for one more run at The Dragon.
Gas stops are laid out about every 60 miles or so. |
