the rules of the game
who ever is "it" takes a picture with their bike in the shot.
the first person to find the location where the picture was taken, and take a picture with their bike in the same place is it and may now post a picture of their bike in a new location.
-All photos used to claim a tag must be "fresh"... no using old files from previous trips

-All photos must be take in a publicly accessible place..

-Your bike must be in the picture... you don't have to be

-you must take the picture your self

-If your tag has not been figured out in 1 week, you need to leave some more clues

-If your tag has not been figured out in 2 weeks, replace it with a new tag

-All tags must be within a 125 mile radius of the store. (178/11)

-When you are claiming a tag, you need to post your picture and a description of the location

-The first to post a picture of their bike at the correct location with a description becomes "it" and wins that tag.

-The prize for winning a tag is bragging rights and the ability to post the next tag location.

I'll start it off with a realy tough one:ok:

Well, it'll be at least this weekend before I can get another tag. Won't be out riding till then. If someone wants to go get it, it's on Hwy 74 right outside of Lake Lure. I think we should up the days that it can stay up though, as there aren't very many of us that ride during the week for any extended rides.

STRETCH

here's your first clue. It's exactly 30 miles from the store if you take the prefered road (watch out for sand in that left hander at mile 25). there is however a more direct way to get there.

as seen from google street view
look for a road named after a moon walker ( not Michael Jackson)

Just edit your post, choose the spot you want the picture in the post, click on the icon that looks like a picture of a mountain at the top of the reply box, right click to copy link location and paste. Here's the link.

If you go into your blog, click on the picture you want to bring it up on a page by itself, copy the address in the address bar, then when you reply click on the icon that looks like a picture of a mountain and paste the link in it. I'ma let you post it yourself, so I took it back off.

I had posted an older photo of the tag, not realizing that it is against the rules. I'd been there again later, but didn't get another shot of the sign.

So I removed my posting for the next tag and posted a couple more clues for Stretch's tag instead.

The place in Stretch's tag is a great educational site, and has an interesting cloak and dagger past.

In case you can't read the sign due to the poor quality pic, it reads "SLOW dangerous curves next 3 miles". I orded a book the other day from a website whose name is pretty much a synonym for the road name. That should be easy enough.

ok here's a couple more hints.

If you started in a town north west of the last tag, there is a famous resteraunt with the towns name in it (******* house) . a great place to have breakfast before a long ride. after breakfast head north and turn in less then a mile on a road that also has the towns name in it as well as a 3 number identifier. this road is alot of fun as it climbs the mountain becouse you have 2 lanes going up the mountain in the same direction wich makes for easy and safe passing. this road dances back and forth across the state line before it finaly changes names in its neighboring state. Just about the time traffic starts to slow you'll find an entertaining retro store with vintage gas pumps out in front. stop inside for a moon pie and an RC cola and feel for a little while like you've gone back in time. If you don't posses the vintage gene you can just pause long enough for a tag picture and continue north to the next town where my favorite mountain road merges with my least favorite mountain road.

STRETCH
09-15-2009, 07:49 PM
I guess no one got that one?
It was on 246 between dillard GA and highlands NC, just north of the state line.

Here's a new one for you to try on ;)
it is also at a state line. Between a lake and a railroad track although I don't think you can see them from here. If you can't tell I realy like these vintage gas stations.
Good luck

Just north of Landrum on US-176, about at the NC line.

This is a green location for all you tree huggers. There are lots of them to hug through here. And there is an environmental camp nearby to learn about what you are hugging.

You don't need an off-road bike to get there, but it might help a little if there has been some rain.

This is a way you could travel if you like going up to the head of Julius, but not back down.

The bike is in the same location, shot from three different directions to make it easy to find this place. :blum:

somebody got some shiny new leathers:ok:

Bucky
09-25-2009, 08:10 AM
Actually they are shiny old leathers -- about 18 years old, I'd guess. One clue is the asymmetrical trim pattern. I bought them from a guy who used to race, but almost never wore them, since he had another suit.

Since I am tall and skinny (though not as tall as Stretch, by a considerable margin), the fit is pretty good for an off-the-shelf suit. Shorty and the boys are not too cramped. The back protector fits well beneath the suit and I bought some hard CE armor from Fieldsheer to fit the pockets inside.

It has rained ever since I posted the new tag. You might need an ATV to get there right now.

Well, it looks as though nobody ventured out to get my tag. [EDIT: Though a nice peaceful ride on a gravel road through the forest might have been just the ticket for a couple of riders I know.]

It is on Green River Road starting north of Caesars Head and ending at US-25. Four miles of gravel in the middle. See my blog (http://buckysride.blogspot.com/2009/09/650r-dualsport-for-day.html) for the route. It is on the map near the bottom of the posting, between map pushpins B and C. Google Maps does not show it as gravel.

Buddyholly, the NASA sign probably disappeared in the 80's right around the time that the NSA took it over for domestic communications monitoring. They stayed in the facility until '95 and then donated it to the school.

Ok time for another hint. I know not many people are riding these days but there isn't much salt between here and the store.

go past the giant arrow head towards the interstate.
turn right 0.3 miles past the arrow head and follow the signs.

I guess I'll have to save that spot for warmer less salty days.
here is a spot that you can find without getting your bike dirty or your fingers cold. I believe it's the only one (not privately owned) in SC.

I was just going to use this second picture. But the picture on the right is technically a violation of rule #2 and for reference only.
in my defense the no vehicles beyond this point sign is very small and was not there the last time I was here.

This is an easy-to-get-to place.

Just one cabin on a lake is nearby.

Relief is nearer by, but it is an uphill battle.

The name of the place sounds as though it might be dangerous.

Here is the new location for the Tag Game. I chose this side of the sign because I felt safer due to the incline which is imperceptible in the picture. The location is several miles off of North Hwy 178 (right turn) on a narrow road. The name of the community where the turn is will be similar to what the sun does every day. Take your time, the road is not in great shape.

To say that the road is in bad shape is an understatement. Maybe they will pave it and smooth it out.
The sign where your bike is parked is new, and legible. The old sign was shot up.
There were great swarms of flies in the vicinity of the sign on Good Friday. I didn't stay long.

There is a right turn off hwy 178 at the Rocky Bottom Camp for the Blind. One must go past the Camp for the Blind to get to the location where I took my picture. Tough work, this tagging, but somebody has to do it.

The new tag is on a road that is twisty, but mostly pretty flat except here on this big hill. It also is rather fishy for a while. There is a large yellow insectivore nearby, and a still place, too.

Great road to the top of Sassafras Mountain, eh 1literhogbeater? Have they started repaving as yet? ...or maybe they will just tar and chip it because it is so lightly used. Has anybody found a view off into the distance from the top? I have wandered about up there several times, but can never see anything.

I noticed over the weekend that NC-215 repaving has begin finally. Maybe they will cover over all the linear patches that they have installed over the last few years.

You're are right STRETCH, they certainly have spent your (not my) tax dollars on guardrail on 215. They managed to leave the overlook just south of the Parkway open for access, but I hope they take away the dropoff between the road and the overlook gravel when they are finished. ...had to just about claw my way back up onto the road.

Beautiful weekend for riding, though. Not a drop of rain from Friday AM until mid-Sunday afternoon. Rode mostly the BRP on the way to, from, and near Black Mountain.

Oh, and I got STRETCH's tag from way back in the winter (01-05-2010). Am I too late? Tell us where it is, please.

Sorry, in my excitement of having finally gotten to one I forgot. Stretch mentioned he was on his way to Franklin from the previous post, so I just literally retraced his steps, took 281 all the way down to 107 (GREAT RIDE BTW) then 107 into Sylva. Once in Sylva I turned left onto 23 business, went about 4 miles into Dillsboro and that's where the road becomes three names (Sylva Hwy. 23, and 441) I turned and went towards Franklin, and sure enough, about 10 mins. out of Franklin, there she was on the right, just prior to reaching a "Gold Mine" tourist trap thing called Gold City - aka Elderado.

It is between Saluda and Tryon North Carolina, and is part of the steepest standard gage railroad in the United States. Read about it here (http://buckysride.blogspot.com/2009/04/saluda-north-carolina-saluda-grade-and.html) on Bucky's Ride Blog.

please be carefull getting this one. This is on one of the top 5 twistiest roads in NC and arguably the most scenic. This can be a frustrating and dangerous combination for motorcyclist as they get frustrated with slow moving, site seeing trafic on what could otherwise be a fun section of road. I hear every year about riders who get hurt or killed atempting to pass slow trafic on this road (there realy isn't any safe places to pass). my suggestion is to relax and enjoy the view, or get there early on a sunday mornig for an uninterupted pass. The original design for this highway had trafic driving behind the waterfall. Later it was decided it would be better to make it a pull off and not have trafic regularly pass under an eroding rock overhang. Extra credit if you get a picture of the water falling in front of your bike like a bridal veil.

Your right Bucky, too easy, but I have no idea why they built it. My guess would be somebody used to live near a real one as a child and simply missed it, had the funds and built one. It's right off Hwy. 11 as you are leaving Cleveland bear left about a mile past the Post office if you are headed towards table rock. It'll be on the left.

This is the only link I could find describing the mural (http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,1377989).
The description from the website:
"This mural caught my eye. I like the way the smoke stack from the building was used [as the locomotive stack]! The Southern and the Piedmont and Northern both served Donalds, and both of the stations still exist. Also the short line (4 miles long), Due West Railroad connected to the Southern at Donalds. The mural is located on the side of a building where SC 184 leaves highway 178. This looks to be along the route that the Due West took from Donalds to Due West to take the students to Erskine College. The depot in Due West still stands today. The locomotive on the mural does not look like a Southern one, or one of the two that was used by the Due West Railroad. My research on the Due West locos shows that there were two of them, an 0-6-0 built by Glover, and an 0-4-4T, ex New York Elevated Railway, builder unknown. The P&N was an electric railway.

they can also be found on page 1:ok:

the rules of the game
who ever is "it" takes a picture with their bike in the shot.
the first person to find the location where the picture was taken, and take a picture with their bike in the same place is it and may now post a picture of their bike in a new location.
-All photos must be "fresh"... no using old files from previous trips

-All photos must be take in a publicly accessible place..

-Your bike must be in the picture... you don't have to be

-you must take the picture your self

-If your tag has not been figured out in 1 week, you need to leave some more clues

-If you tag has not been figured out in 2 weeks, replace it with a new tag

-All tags must be within a 125 mile radius of the store. (178/11)

-When you are claiming a tag, you need to post your picture and a description of the location

-The first to post a picture of their bike at the correct location with a description becomes "it" and wins that tag.

-The prize for winning a tag is bragging rights and the ability to post the next tag location.

Got it: Bryson City, The Road To Nowhere

The Road to Nowhere gets lots of attention simply for its nickname. It is a real road -- Everett Street, then Lakeview Drive or Fontana Road -- from Bryson City that ends just beyond a tunnel inside the bounds of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But that’s the end of the road. If you want to venture further you have to do it by foot or horseback.

The road received its name from a dispute during the 1930s and ‘40s when Swain County gave up the majority of its private land to the federal government for the creation of Fontana Lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hundreds of people were forced to leave the small communities that had been their homes for generations. The road that led to the area was flooded beneath the waters of the lake, cutting off access to a number of family cemeteries. The federal government made an agreement with Swain County to replace the road with a new one along the lake’s north shore.

Construction of the road began in the 1960s but was halted because of an environmental issue, leaving the road though the tunnel completed, but nothing else. The government runs a ferry service from the south side of Fontana Lake few times a month, most of the year, so people can visit the isolated cemeteries.

The Road to Nowhere is just a quick, curvy, eight-mile drive (watch for pavement patches) outside of Bryson City. You’ll pass Swain County High School and eventually see a sign that says you have entered the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You will also see a sign that says “The Road to Nowhere—A Promise Broken.” The road ends at a barrier with the tunnel in sight beyond.

A cash settlement from the federal government in liew of completing the road was made in February of 2010.

Route map is here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=easley,+sc&daddr=bryson+city,+nc+to:1415+Fontana+Rd,+Bryson+C ity,+NC+28713-6951+(Swain+County+High+School)+to:Unknown+road&geocode=FQ52EwIdz5kT-ym7Da54DkhYiDGuft9af6rU4Q%3BFRGiHAIdq7EG-ylVKvLPXUhZiDGFd5sorcOJhA%3BFefcHAId5JEG-yGu3DuBnfpsUQ%3BFRYZHQId2z4F-w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=2&mrsp=3&sz=16&sll=35.456825,-83.532422&sspn=0.010487,0.022724&ie=UTF8&ll=35.445009,-83.495064&spn=0.167817,0.363579&t=h&z=12).

-View from road barrier.
-View a little closer.
-Horse manure and motorcycle tire.
-Closer still.
-The far side -- only a trail continues. It is not obvious where the road was to go. Any direction appears to require another tunnel or significant cutting and filling.
-Looking out from the tunnel entrance.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, that one wasn't found either. How about this one?

Don't go too fast here, or your heart well may end up in your throat when you hit the water.

Nearby is a structure that won the AISC Annual Award of Merit in 1958.

(I took this with the camera self-timer, running madly across the road to get mounted up in time for the shutter to open.)

With the recent cold weather, the water might be closer to being ice!

As in Hartwell Lake. This is at the Hartwell Lake on the Georgia side of the Hartwell Dam. The earthen part of the dam is in the background.

Yes! and I have a series of about 12 photos to prove it. I was trying to get it just right. Just ignored the local fishermen as they had to dodge my camera sitting on top of my tank bag placed in the middle the road. Kept my helmet on, to protect my identity. :newrofl:

bcool asked me to repost his picture here.

I use Picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) to edit my pictures, and used it to resize his 1.39 MB original so it could be uploaded directly to the forum.
In Picasa, I select the photo(s) I want to upload, then use the Export Picture to Folder function. The default settings there: Image Size Options, Resize to, 640 pixels seem to work well.
Then I upload from my hard disk using the forum commands Attach Files, Manage Attachments pushbutton.

I think bcool did well, dashing back and forth across the road in full view of incredulous bystanders to get it -- with his helmet on. [I know the technique, bcool.]

Note the difference in tree foliage. My pic was taken September 11, 2010.

Notice that there is a new bridge built right on top of the old bridge. Hillbillies are no where to be found on this road, who's name implies that there could possibly be two sources of water here. Approximately 55 miles from The Store, of course, located at 178 & 11. Happy hunting!

Happy New Year everyone! I know with the holidays and weather not many have been riding but thought I would post a new clue.

Before this body of water was flooded by a Corps of Engineers dam, this creek was named for a large, amphibious rodent of the genus Castor, and the product of his hard work. This lake is part of the border between two states.

I'd actually just figured it out the hard way. I did a Google street view search of every bridge within a 55 mile radius until I found one that looked the same. there are a few distinct features here.
your clue would have saved a little time.

old dobbins bridge rd.
near the southern end of HWY 11
It was the only road in the area that had both a metal guard rail and power lines on the bridge.

that was fun.
google said I was only an hour away, but I refused to take any major roads, or a map. I just wandered west accross 120 miles of random back roads untill I found it. I actualy road over the bridge without recognizing it the first time.
It was kind of fun exploring the low lands, and it was nice not having to wash the bike when I got home.

I've got an idea for my next tag, but I won't be able to post a picture untill tomorow.
but here is a hint, that you may understand if you've seen it before.
It was a gas station 39 miles from six mile, 25 miles from pumpkintown, 8 miles from tooter town, 4 miles from Gramling and only 1/2 a mile from "Junkie John"
this one may even stump Bucky :tease:

You know I like railroad depots. This one sits mostly alone, with few other structures nearby. The passenger train doesn't stop here any more, but does stop about eight miles or twenty eight miles away.

funny bit of trivia about duke power.
I read recently that the Oconee nuclear power station, at night when they have a surplus of power, pumps water up to Bad creek
and then during the day it runs back down powering the hydro electic turbines.

Indeed the view from 183, it's on the right just over the bridge where Oconee and Pickens counties meet. That bridge crosses what is a stream most of the time however, when they open up the hydro station sirens sound for 5 mins. prior to the floodgates opening so that any fisherman in the stream can get out. The stream quickly turns into a ragging river in short order. On the other side of the dam is Lake Keowee. Even today I'll bet the temp. of the water there is 78 degrees --- it's where the water used to cool the three nuclear reactors is released. A few years ago I went water skiing there in Feb. It's all good as long as you don't go down further out in the lake. :ohyea:

Yes, they do. It is a nicely-efficient way to use excess power generated by coal and nuclear plants when it is not needed by customers, then get that power back when more than is being generated is demanded by those customers.

You can read about it here (http://buckysride.blogspot.com/2009/12/dual-sporting-again.html).

Another interesting fact is that the Oconee Nuclear Station has generated more power than any other nuclear plant in the U.S.

Duke Power is a great asset to this area in conservation, recreation, and in power generation.

Stretch is sneaky, the closest town 66 miles "due west" of the store that might have a cemetary like that was Clayton GA, it aint there. But thanks to a law abiding citizen I was able to find it today. Stretch told us right where it is: DUE WEST,SC on route 184 there's a large church cemetary right next to Erskin College.
