My friend Josh (.akai) and I have been talking about riding to each county in SC and taking pictures in front of each Chamber of Commerce. We finally started today and got our first couple of pictures. Thought we'd post up to share and keep a history of all of it.

Merchants can not impose a minimum purchase amount in order to use a credit/debit card, doing so violates their agrement with VISA/MASTERCARD and they could lose their ability to accept CCs

Rhonda Bentz, vice president of Visa USA, says a merchant can try to “steer the cardholder to another form of payment.” For instance, they can offer a cash discount. But, she says, they cannot refuse a transaction because it’s too small.

For the record, here is the official policy of Visa: “Visa merchants are not permitted to establish minimum transaction amounts, even on sale items. Imposing minimum or maximum purchase amounts is a violation.”

And here is MasterCard's: “A merchant must not require, or post signs indicating that it requires, a minimum or maximum transaction amount to accept a valid mastercard."

Also staright from VISA Corporate website:

Can merchants set a minimum purchase or charge a fee for using my Visa card?
Visa has certain regulations that all merchants that accept Visa cards must follow. One of those rules is that Visa merchants are not permitted to establish minimum transaction amounts, even on sale items.
If you run into a problem like this with a merchant, please notify your Visa card-issuing bank. Visa member banks have access to the appropriate Visa rules and regulations as well as to the Notification of Customer Complaint forms which should be used by the bank to document and file merchant complaints.

Feel free to ride over to Union and the Solo gas station on Hwy 176 and let them know that. But definately good information for future reference.

Ive done it at numerous places that have those signs posted. Its amazing what happens when you tell them that what they are doing is not allowed by their agreement with VISA/MASTERCARD and they could lose their priviledge to accept CCs, as well as letting them know i would be contacting the BBB about it...

I think no minimum purchase is fine.... but I believe everyone should have to show ID every time..... It would cut down on fraud and credit card theft.

I agree. That's why I refuse to sign the back of my cards. Too many places don't check for ID when they take a card and if someone ever stole my cards my signature would be a way of proving it wasn't me.

Walmart will sell you a computer and give you up to $60 back without even touching the card.

Gas stations let you charge $100 at the pump, without looking at your card.

Fast food touches it, but they never ask for a signature or ID.

So, when someone steals your card, expect to see $1168.36 charged in the first hour.

Chamber of commerce is a neat idea. Why not the county jail, or morgue? Or heck, get all the motorcycle dealers in the state.

I've seen enough county jails in my life that I don't want to voluntarily visit any. Morgue's, that's just a bit morbid LOL. We might do Motorcycle dealers next, that's a good idea, but they're too spread out usually, and some counties don't have any. We've found that there seems to be ~30 miles between every Chamber of Commerce in the state so far. We've still got 36 more to go. Can't wait for the ones down at the lower part of the state on the coast.
