2011 Daytona Bike Week Planning

I know it's still couple of months away but I thought I'd start this thread to see if we can plan a group ride down to Daytona BW this year. We can also setup meeting points en route to Daytona as we head south for riders wanting to join the ride from other areas.

We had few of us ride down together last year- Todd, Tim & I. There were few others that rode down from our neck of the woods but we did not get to meet up. We took mostly back roads until we got tired and decided to superslab it with about 50 miles left to Daytona.

I got food poisoning from eating stale clam chowder soup at Wings- DON'T EAT THERE! If you want Wings, go to the old reliable Hooters. Better view anyway IMO. I was OK after half a day of puking!

We demo'd few new bikes, saw a Noob on a Harley crash a brand new Kawi Z1000 while on a demo ride. Camped out at Daytona Speedway- May do that again although this option is open. Drank way too much. Saw bunch of manufacturer booths, hundreds of vendors, visited Mainstreet to look at all the choppers, etc. In summary, a fun week and a great way to kick off 2011 riding season.

Everyone riding down did have heated gear on and it is highly recommended as temperature on last year departure date was still in the low 30's. Almost 500 miles exactly from Charlotte to the Speedway. Easy one day ride!

I've got to get new tires put on my VStrom pig. Last ride to Jonas Ridge finally finished my tire. I may tap Mr. Wanderer13 to assist me if he has the time.

This is the schedule so far. I will add as I find additional events:

Daytona Supercross March 5, 2011
The world's top Supercross riders such as Chad Reed, Davi Millsaps, Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto battle on a tough and demanding course.

Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur Supercross Championship March 6 - 7, 2011
The Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur Supercross Championship will take place on Sunday, March 6 and on Monday, March 7, Carmichael will then host Ricky Carmichael University, a public riding school hosted by the 15-Time AMA National Champion.

AMA Flat Track March 10 - 11, 2011
Daytona International Speedway will host the AMA Pro Flat Track doubleheader on a quarter-mile lime rock track in the West Lot located outside Turns 1 and 2.

Alligator Enduro March 10, 2011

AMA Pro Superbike and Supersport doubleheader Friday, March 11 and Saturday, March 12
Including the AMA Pro Vance & Hines XR1200 Series, which features riders aboard specially modified Harley-Davidson XR1200 motorcycles

Daytona 200 March 12, 2011
Top riders in AMA Pro Racing battle in America’s most historic motorcycle race.

Re: 2011 Daytona Bike Week Planning

Thanks for getting a thread going Jon. I'm interested in heading down to Daytona again as well, though it's a bit early for me to commit. Had fun last year though.

Like you, I'll need to get at least a new rear tire on the bike before heading down. I'm kinda waiting to hear the reviews of the new Pilot Road 3, or possibly pick up a PR2 once the price drops after the PR3 is released. :dance3:

I don't know if I'd want to stay at the Speedway again myself. It was no cheaper than a campground and I was a bit disappointed by how few people were staying there - not much of a social scene once we got back to camp in the evening. I remember checking this place out last year before we decided on staying at the Speedway and it seemed like a pretty decent spot: http://www.daytona200mc.com/index.html

I haven't heard from Tim in a while, so I don't know if he's interested in heading down again or not.

I agree on the campground. I also don't have exact date of departure just yet since they spread out the events- Supercross & Daytona 200 are now 7 days apart which basically will mean that I will not be able to catch both races if only attending for few days. Another BS from DMG.

I am really looking forward to the 85 degree weather and checking out the Bike Week events and races.

At this moment I believe I will be there but not sure whether I'll have my bike with me. Working at the track from about the 2nd of March thru the 13th.

If the weather pushes the 80s that would be awesome :crazyass: but the last couple of years its been flippin' cold.

+1 as there were frost on the ground every morning although it did warm up to low 80's by late afternoon.

Hope you can make it.

I haven't heard from Tim yet but Wanderer indicated that he may go with us this year.

That would be great if David can join. I haven't spoken to Tim since October. Sent him a couple of emails a while back and didn't get a response. Might have to give him a ring and see if he's still breathing.

PS - I've casually been shopping for a warmer sleeping bag and perhaps a replacement for my too small, too slippery, Thermarest. :dance3:

Don't forget your heater! I PM'd Tim but never got a response. If you do make contact, let me know if he plans to attend. Wanderer mentioned that he wanted to attend the Supercross race on Sat. 03/05. I thought if we could leave out Friday or so and stay few days, that would work for me. David, chime in and let us know. Todd, how does that schedule work for you?

I found out the other day that we may be heading to VA for my nephew's birthday on 3/7 (Monday). I might see if I can do a Thursday-Sunday trip to Daytona. I've missed the last 2 years and would like to get back down there. I will keep you posted.

Jon, do you want to try and knock out that front tire on Wednesday?
